Dear Parents:
I hope you all had a wonderful week and got to play in the snow (not just shovel). Even though we had a short week, we still accomplished a lot.
Here is a re-cap of what we did this week:
Reading: Students had their regular reading centers where they read a levelled Fountas and Pinnell book, did word work, practiced handwriting, and did a Piggie and Elephant activity. We also made Piggie and Elephant puppets. They are adorable! Students will be using the puppets to read their plays and act out Mo Willems’ Piggie and Elephant series.
Writing: This week, we worked on our Piggie and Elephant plays. Most of the students are finished.
Social Studies: I continued to read Chinese Folktales to the students. We started learning about Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year takes place on Thursday, February 19. Over the next few weeks, we will continue to learn about China through hands-on projects.
Science: We continued to learn about shadows. I printed out our Shadows book that we made last week. This week, we continued to work on our birch tree shadow project. We should have them finished by today.
Have a wonderful weekend! Andrea

Friday Letter January 23, 2015
Dear Parents:
I hope everyone had a wonderful week! I learned a lot of useful information at my conference. Felicia Motherway told me everything went well the two days I was out.
Next week, we will be participating in the Kindness Challenge. The First Grade Team decided to modify the challenge to make it more kid-friendly. A list of the new challenges went home with the students today. I will be keeping track of the students’ acts of kindness. When I find students are completing a task, a kindness slip will go into a glass jar. At the end of the week, we are hoping to have the entire glass jar filled.
Here is a re-cap of our week:
Math: On Monday, students practiced their calendar skills by creating their own January calendar. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students measured distances around the room using different units. We will continue to work with measurement next week.
Writing: On Monday, students started to create their own Piggie and Elephant plays. Next week, we will make piggie and elephant puppets so we can act out our plays.
Reading: Students worked in their weekly centers: word work, read to self, handwriting, guided reading, and worked on a piggie and elephant activity.
Science: On Thursday, students learned about bending light. Felicia led an experiment where a pencil was put into a jar of water. Students had to predict what would happen to the pencil. On Friday, we started our birch tree shadow project. They are already coming out beautifully!
Social Studies: I continued to read Chinese folktales to the students. In the next couple of weeks, we will be making Ming vases, Chinese lanterns, and dragons.
Thank you to all the parents who brought in supplies for the classroom.
Have a lovely weekend! Andrea

Friday Letter January 16, 2015
Dear Parents:
Happy Friday! I hope you all had a wonderful week!
We are running low on some general supplies. If you could donate an item or two, it would be greatly appreciated: Tissues, markers (most of ours are dry), pencils
Next Wednesday and Thursday, I will not be in school. I will be attending a professional development in Bedford, NH. Felicia Motherway will be the substitute.
Here is a re-cap of what we did this week:
Math: We continued our measurement unit. Students measured pictures of fish with inch tiles. Each type of fish had to be a certain length for it to be a keeper. On Thursday, students designed their own fish and decided how long it needed to be to be a keeper.
Reading: Students participated in their weekly reading centers. This week, I read two more Piggie and Elephant books: We Are in a Book, and I Love My New Toy!.
Writing: Students began writing their own Piggie and Elephant books. They started to organize the main components of a story on a graphic organizer. Next week, students will begin writing the dialogue for their plays.
Science: Students continued to explore what transparency, translucent, & opaque mean with light experiments.
Social Studies: I have been reading Chinese folktales to the students during read aloud. We have also been reading non-fiction books about China. Students have been comparing and contrasting Chinese culture w/ American culture. This week, students made beautiful koi fish with crayon-resist.
Have a wonderful long weekend! Andrea

Dear Parents:
I hope you all had a lovely mini vacation! We are getting back into the swing of things!
Supplies: We need 17 pink socks and 17 gray socks to make sock puppets. If you can donate a package, we would greatly appreciate it! We will be turning them into Piggie and Elephant puppets and students will be writing their own plays.
Here is a re-cap of what we did this week:
Math: We reviewed skip counting on Monday and took a quick assessment on Tuesday. On Wednesday we started our new unit on measurement.
Reading: We read another Piggie and Elephant story: There is a Bird on Your Head. We are getting familiar with the characters so students can write their own plays. Students also participated in their weekly reading centers.
Writing: On Monday and Tuesday, students finished their, Snowmen at Night, stories. We started to discuss, “How To,” books and students started to create their own, How to Build a Snowman, mini book. We will finish this next week.
Social Studies: We finished our banyan trees on Monday and began learning about China. On Friday, we learned about tangrams and students created their own Chinese puzzle pictures.
Science: We started our unit on light. Students explored the room, deciding what items were transparent, opaque, and translucent. We will discuss these terms next week.
Have a wonderful weekend! Andrea
