Dear Parents:
Happy Friday! I hope you all had a wonderful week. The students have been working extremely hard on their mid-year assessments. We have finished our reading assessments and are almost finished with our math assessment. Next week, we will work on our narrative writing assessment and Words Their Way Spelling test. To give the students a well deserved break, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Tuesday and Chinese New Year on Thursday. We need volunteers to help out at the art centers for both days. We need help Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon from 12:30-1:45. We also need help Thursday afternoon. If you can volunteer your time on any of those days, please e-mail me and let me know.
Here is a re-cap of the week:
Reading: Students participated in two more rounds of literacy centers. While at these centers, they worked on handwriting, their word family spelling words, a phonics game, and reading assessments. Next week, we will be reviewing the word families and sight words we have studied so far this year.
Writing: Students did a lot of free writing in their writing journals this week. We also made an acrostic poem out of the word China, to go along with our beautiful cherry blossom projects.
Social Studies: Students created a cherry blossom painting using water colors, black acrylic paint, and tissue paper for the blossoms. We began to look at Chinese porcelain and students began designing their own plates with pictures of Chinese culture.
Math: We've been working on our mid-year math assessments & sharpening our subtraction skills.
Phonics: For the last two weeks, we have been reviewing the short e vowel. Students worked on their Explode the Code packets and made a bird’s nest, with eggs that had short e words on them.
Have a wonderful weekend! Andrea
