Friday Letter May 15, 2015

Dear Parents:

I hope you had a fabulous week.  Just a reminder, the Art Show is this weekend at Memories in Kingston (Sat. 11 am-9 pm & Sun. 11 am- 8 pm).  Come support SCS & get an ice cream!

Thank you to all the parents who have donated their time, money, and ideas to help fund our move to the new building.  We are all very excited to move to the new location in Stratham.

Here’s a re-cap of this week’s activities:

Reading:  Students participated in their reading centers: guided reading with the teacher, book work, word work, digraph work, and read-to-self. This week, we worked on the -th digraph.  For book work, students chose their favorite Mo Willems book and wrote three reasons why it was their favorite book out of the series.

Writing:  We continued to create wonderful poetry! This week we finished our cinquain poems and began writing acrostic poems.  Together, we created a habitat and rain acrostic poem.

Science:  This week, we discussed the four types of animal communication: auditory, tactile, chemical, and visual.  Students first practiced communicating with one another without using words.  During the week, we watched a couple short clips on how certain animals communicate.  On Friday, we began to discuss camouflage. We went outside to a grassy area and the students pretended they were birds looking for seeds and worms.  The worms were different color popsicle sticks and the seeds were multi-color beads.  After the activity, we discussed what color “worms” and “seeds” were the easiest to find.  I read Eric Carle’s story, The Mixed-Up Chameleon.  Students were given a paper chameleon and had to decide what item in the room they wanted the chameleon to blend in with.  Students tried their best to color in the chameleon to blend in with the item.   They all did a great job!

Math:  We continued working on ways to fill a shape with different combinations of pattern blocks.  We took an assessment on Friday, where students had to demonstrate the multiple ways you can create a hexagon.

Phonics:  We worked on the -ea vowel combination.  Students did -ee and -ea word sorts.

Have a wonderful weekend and see you at the Art Show!
Andrea
